CAT is a filter, not a qualification rule
CAT exists because the IIMs and a small group of comparable campus programmes have far more applicants than seats. It is a rationing device. Distance and online programmes do not have that constraint — capacity is not the limiting factor — so most admit directly on graduation marks.
Skipping the entrance test does not change the syllabus, the assessment, or what the certificate says. What determines the value of your qualification is the awarding institution and what you do with what you learn.
The actual admission criteria
- A bachelor’s degree of at least three years
- A minimum aggregate, commonly around 50 per cent
- Occasionally, the university’s own short aptitude paper or a telephone interview
- For executive variants, a stated number of years of work experience
Autonomous institutes such as IICT and IIPM typically review your profile and objectives rather than testing you — the emphasis is on fit rather than on rank.
“Direct admission” is not a licence to skip verification
Direct admission means no entrance test. It does not mean no checks on your side. The absence of an exam is exactly the condition in which unrecognised programmes recruit most easily. Run the same verification you would for any programme: UGC recognition, DEB entitlement for your session, the fee in writing, payment to the institution’s own account.
Frequently asked
Can I get an MBA without CAT?
Yes. CAT is used mainly by the IIMs and a set of competitive campus programmes. Most distance and online MBA programmes admit on graduation marks, and many run direct admission with no national test.
Does skipping the entrance exam weaken the degree?
No. The entrance test filters who gets in; it does not change what is taught or what the certificate says. The awarding institution is what matters.
What is direct admission?
Admission on the basis of your existing qualifications rather than a competitive test. It removes the exam, not your responsibility to verify the programme.
Two autonomous institutes worth knowing
If you decide the autonomous route fits your career better than a university degree, these are the two established names in the space — both operating independently for over 30 years, on the same model the IIMs used until 2017.
