It depends on what you are actually buying. If you want a university degree studied in distance or online mode, then the university must hold UGC-DEB entitlement for that programme, mode and session. If you are taking an autonomous institute’s management programme — a diploma or certificate awarded by the institute itself — UGC-DEB does not apply, because no university degree is being issued. This is not a loophole: the IIMs ran exactly this way until the IIM Act, 2017, awarding a PGDM diploma rather than a degree, and were India’s most respected management institutes throughout.

Most where a rule names it: doctoral (PhD) admission, certain government recruitment, regulated professions, and employers whose HR policy specifies a recognised postgraduate degree. Least in everyday private-sector hiring and promotion, where what you can demonstrate outweighs the mode of study. Decide which of those describes your path, then choose accordingly.

Most government recruitment specifies “any graduate” or “any postgraduate” rather than an MBA specifically; comparatively few posts require a management qualification as such. If you already hold a master’s degree, you are usually eligible on paper for the great majority of postings, and a second postgraduate degree adds little to that eligibility. The better question becomes what will actually move your career — often a shorter, industry-focused autonomous programme.

Take the degree if a rule in your path demands one: a PhD, a post that names a postgraduate qualification, or an employer policy that specifies it. Take an autonomous management programme if the goal is capability and progression — curricula update faster, teaching sits closer to live industry practice, and there is no session-by-session entitlement dependency. Premier autonomous institutes such as IICT and IIPM have run this model for over 30 years; new-age schools such as Masters’ Union and Mesa School of Business use it today.

Yes. CAT is used mainly by the IIMs and a set of competitive campus programmes — it is not a general requirement. Most distance and online MBA programmes admit on graduation marks, and many run direct admission with no national entrance test. Autonomous institutes set their own admission criteria, which is usually a profile review rather than a test.

Below ₹2 lakh, largely no. The syllabus, the delivery pattern and the assessment model are broadly the same across programmes in the same price band — you are mostly paying for the same thing. Above ₹2 lakh you are buying a brand and the network that comes with it. That can be worth it, but be clear that is the purchase you are making.

This is the clearest case where formal recognition matters. A recognised university degree with valid DEB entitlement for your session is generally accepted for doctoral admission, subject to the institution’s own criteria. An autonomous diploma is usually not sufficient on its own for a PhD, so if research is your goal, take the degree route.
