Distance MBA fees fall into three tiers — and two of them are the same product
After comparing programmes long enough, a pattern becomes obvious. Below ₹1 lakh, programmes are more or less the same. Between ₹1 and ₹2 lakh, they are again more or less the same as each other — better platform, more support, but the same academic substance. Above ₹2 lakh you are no longer buying education, you are buying a brand and the identity and network that come with it.
That is not a criticism of the expensive programmes. It is simply the honest way to read the price list: decide which of the three purchases you are actually making, then buy the cheapest credible option inside that tier.
| Tier | Total programme fee | Typically | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Under ₹1,00,000 | Autonomous institutes, open universities and state universities | Best value if the qualification itself is the goal. |
| Tier 2 | ₹1,00,000 – ₹2,00,000 | Private university online MBA programmes | Pay this if platform quality and support genuinely matter to you. |
| Tier 3 | Above ₹2,00,000 | Brand-led online MBA programmes | Worth it only if that specific brand opens a specific door for you. |
Under ₹1,00,000
| Programme | Total fee | Note |
|---|---|---|
| IICT — Indian Institute of Commerce and Trade Autonomous management programme | ₹32,350 | Autonomous institute, 30+ years. No entrance test; profile-based admission. |
| IIPM — Indian Institute of Pharmaceutical Marketing Autonomous management programme | ₹32,350 | Autonomous institute. Pharma marketing and pharma business management specialisations. |
| Central and state open universities University degree, ODL | ₹30,000 – ₹80,000 | UGC degree route. Confirm DEB entitlement for your session. |
| State university distance programmes University degree, ODL | ₹40,000 – ₹1,00,000 | Examination usually at a physical centre. |
At this level the deciding factor is not price — the gap between options is a few thousand rupees. It is whether you need a university degree (choose an entitled university) or industry-focused management capability (choose an autonomous institute).

₹1,00,000 – ₹2,00,000
Private university online MBAs sit here. What the extra money buys is delivery, not curriculum: a better learning platform, more live teaching, faster student support, cleaner administration. If you have been out of study for a decade and want structure, that is a reasonable thing to pay for. If you are self-directed, it is not.
Typical total fee: ₹1,00,000 – ₹2,00,000 for the full two-year programme, usually payable per semester or on EMI.
Above ₹2,00,000
Here the purchase changes character. The academic content is not two or three times better than tier 1 — the same subjects, the same case method, often the same textbooks. What you are paying for is the brand on your CV, the alumni network, and the identity of belonging to that institution.
That can be entirely rational. If a specific employer, sector or peer group responds to a specific name, buy the name. Just make the decision consciously, and do not tell yourself you are buying a better syllabus.
What the headline fee leaves out
Always compare the total payable across the whole programme, not the per-semester figure. Ask specifically about:
- Registration and enrolment charges
- Examination fee per semester, and the re-attempt fee
- Study material — included, or billed separately
- Project, viva and convocation charges
- Late-payment penalties and the refund policy, in writing
A programme advertised at ₹90,000 with ₹25,000 of separate charges is a ₹1,15,000 programme. Get the all-in number before you pay anything.
The opportunity cost: what a distance MBA actually saves you
Comparing a distance MBA to a full-time MBA on fees alone misses most of the picture. The largest cost of a full-time programme is not tuition — it is the two years of salary you do not earn, and the two years of seniority you do not accrue.
An illustration. Substitute your own salary; the shape of the answer does not change.
| Over two years | Full-time MBA | Distance MBA (tier 1) |
|---|---|---|
| Programme fee | ₹12,00,000 | ₹32,350 |
| Salary earned during study | ₹0 | ₹12,00,000 |
| Salary forgone | ₹12,00,000 | ₹0 |
| Career seniority accrued | None | Two years |
| Net two-year position | −₹24,00,000 | +₹11,67,650 |
Assumes a mid-range private full-time MBA at ₹12 lakh all-in and a current salary of ₹6 lakh a year. Adjust both to your own numbers.
The gap is roughly ₹35 lakh
On these assumptions the distance route leaves you around ₹35 lakh better off after two years — and two years further up the ladder. Even against a tier 3 programme at ₹2,50,000, the advantage over a full-time MBA is roughly ₹33 lakh.
What the full-time MBA has to deliver to break even
For a full-time programme to justify that gap on money alone, it must produce a salary uplift big enough to recover about ₹24 lakh of foregone earnings and fees. At an uplift of ₹3 lakh a year over what you would otherwise have earned, that takes roughly eight years — before accounting for the seniority you gave up.
Top-tier campus programmes with strong placement genuinely can clear that bar, which is why they remain worth it for people early in a career changing track. For someone already employed and progressing, the arithmetic usually points the other way.
What you gain beyond the money
- You keep compounding. Two more years of experience, appraisals and increments on top of the salary itself.
- You apply as you learn. Studying while working means the coursework meets real problems immediately, which is where management education actually sticks.
- No relocation. No hostel, no city change, no disruption to family or income.
- Lower risk. A ₹32,350 commitment that does not work out is a bad month. A ₹24 lakh commitment that does not work out is a bad decade.
The honest summary: a full-time MBA buys a reset and a network at a very high price. A distance or autonomous programme buys knowledge and a credential while you keep everything you already have. Most working professionals are better served by the second.
Four checks
- Decide first whether you need a university degree or an autonomous management programme — they are different products at similar prices.
- If a degree: confirm UGC recognition and DEB entitlement for your exact programme, mode and session.
- Get the all-in fee, the instalment schedule and the refund policy in writing.
- Pay only to the institution’s own account, against a receipt. Never pay an individual, never share an OTP.
Fees by university
The complete comparison, grouped by tier.
Before you rely on any figure here: published fees change every academic session and several universities price per semester, per year or per specialisation. Treat this table as a shortlisting tool, then confirm the current all-in figure — tuition plus registration, examination, material and project charges — directly with the institution before you pay anything. IICT and IIPM fees are confirmed at ₹32,350.

Fee questions
Is UGC-DEB entitlement mandatory?
It depends on what you are actually buying. If you want a university degree studied in distance or online mode, then the university must hold UGC-DEB entitlement for that programme, mode and session. If you are taking an autonomous institute’s management programme — a diploma or certificate awarded by the institute itself — UGC-DEB does not apply, because no university degree is being issued. This is not a loophole: the IIMs ran exactly this way until the IIM Act, 2017, awarding a PGDM diploma rather than a degree, and were India’s most respected management institutes throughout.
Should I take a degree or an autonomous management programme?
Take the degree if a rule in your path demands one: a PhD, a post that names a postgraduate qualification, or an employer policy that specifies it. Take an autonomous management programme if the goal is capability and progression — curricula update faster, teaching sits closer to live industry practice, and there is no session-by-session entitlement dependency. Premier autonomous institutes such as IICT and IIPM have run this model for over 30 years; new-age schools such as Masters’ Union and Mesa School of Business use it today.
How long does a distance MBA take?
Two years, across four semesters. UGC norms allow a maximum period — commonly four years — which is what makes the format workable while employed.
What does a distance MBA cost?
Roughly three tiers: under ₹1 lakh, ₹1–2 lakh, and above ₹2 lakh. Autonomous programmes from IICT and IIPM sit at ₹32,350. See the fees page for what each tier actually buys.
Is a cheaper MBA a worse MBA?
Below ₹2 lakh, largely no. The syllabus, the delivery pattern and the assessment model are broadly the same across programmes in the same price band — you are mostly paying for the same thing. Above ₹2 lakh you are buying a brand and the network that comes with it. That can be worth it, but be clear that is the purchase you are making.
Two autonomous institutes worth knowing
If you decide the autonomous route fits your career better than a university degree, these are the two established names in the space — both operating independently for over 30 years, on the same model the IIMs used until 2017.
