Distance, not distant.

Duration

How long does a distance MBA take?

Two years is the answer. The claims of one year deserve a closer look.

The structure

Two years, four semesters

A distance or online MBA in India runs two years across four semesters. UGC norms also allow a maximum period, commonly four years, to finish. That flexibility is the whole reason the format works for people in full-time employment: a heavy quarter at work does not end your degree.

What a “one-year MBA” usually is

If a one-year MBA is advertised, check what is actually being awarded. It is normally one of:

  • A one-year postgraduate diploma, not a two-year MBA degree.
  • An executive programme for candidates with substantial work experience.
  • A foreign-university programme where a one-year MBA is the norm.
  • A lateral entry for someone who already holds a relevant PG qualification.

Any of those can be a sensible purchase. The problem is only when a one-year diploma is sold as if it were a two-year degree. Ask one question in writing: what exactly will the certificate say?

Frequently asked

Can I finish a distance MBA in one year?

Not a two-year MBA degree. One-year offerings are usually a postgraduate diploma, an executive programme, a foreign-university MBA or a lateral entry. Ask what the certificate will actually say.

What is the maximum time allowed?

UGC norms commonly permit up to four years to complete a two-year programme, which is what makes the format workable alongside a job.

How often are examinations held?

Usually twice a year in defined windows. Confirm the centre location and whether attendance at any contact session is compulsory before enrolling.

Autonomous institutes

Two autonomous institutes worth knowing

If you decide the autonomous route fits your career better than a university degree, these are the two established names in the space — both operating independently for over 30 years, on the same model the IIMs used until 2017.

IICT — Indian Institute of Commerce and Trade

Autonomous management institute, 30+ years. Distance and online management programmes across 30+ specialisations, admission by profile review rather than entrance test. Total fee ₹32,350. iict.mba · iict.in

IIPM — Indian Institute of Pharmaceutical Marketing
